“We have been working on this project almost a year now,” TAI CEO Mehmet Demiroğlu told Breaking Defense.
Analysts told Breaking Defense the S-400 and sanctions present significant hurdles, but they’re not impossible to overcome.
"Indonesia wants to participate in the development of the 'KAAN' 5th-generation fighter jet and submarine development with the Turkish industry," the Indonesian president said at a press conference with his Turkish counterpart.
"There are lots of interest [from a] number of countries, but these things are taking a lot of time and high-level decisions,” Turkish Aerospace Industries General Manager Mehmet Demiroglu told Breaking Defense.
Turkey is currently facing a fighter gap as it waits for its planned 5th generation KAAN fighter to come online in 2030.
"Turkish air power has a stopgap trouble up until the indigenous KAAN makes it," analyst Can Kasapoglu told Breaking Defense. "The [Eurofighter] can offer some relief, depending on the tranche."
